How Circular Sock Knitting Machine Works

How Circular Sock Knitting Machine Works

Sock Knitting Machine

This In House Test Method circular sock knitting machine describes the method of test in order to determine any dimensional change which may occur to socks when subjected to washing. The correct number of test specimens are to be prepared and tested as specified within this test method in order to achieve a performance assessment of the product/fabric as described within the scope.

Sock Knitting Machine Equipment

  • WASCATOR washing machine with BSEN26330 programme facilities.
  • BSEN26330 method.
  • Tumble dryer meeting the criteria of the HLCC guidelines for tumble drying.
  • TS Maximum Stretch boards with the appropriate heel marks (produced by Hoseforma).
  • Indelible markers.
  • Metal graduated metric rule.
  • Balance accurate to 1 decimal place.
  • Polyester make-weights.
  • ECE reference detergent (including sodium perborate).

Preparation of Test Specimens/Materials

A minimum of 1 pair of socks is required for the procedure. You should know more about Sock Abrason Tester

Test Procedure of Sock Knitting Machine

  • The size of the socks to be indicated to the laboratory at the start of the procedure.
  • Place each sock on a flat surface and place marks as indicated in Diagram 1.
  • Measure the length dimension and record the measurement.
  • Measure both leg (a) and foot (b).
Test Procedure of Sock Knitting Machine
Test Procedure of Sock Knitting Machine
  • Select the appropriate sized TS stretch board for the sock under test
  • Pull each sock in turn onto the board stretching it fully, extending the leg and massaging the foot into position around the toe and heel.  The heel pickline must fall in line with the heel pick indicator on the sock board.
  • Observe if the sock fits the board

    • comfortably
    • is too large (eg excess at the toe).
    • Take hold of the fabric at the top of the heel (bottom of the leg) as indicated in Diagram 2 and pull towards you.  If the fabric extends beyond the second line (after the heel pick line) on non elastomeric socks or beyond the third line on elastomeric socks, then the sock should be recorded as “large”.
    • Is too small (eg if the heel pocket is creeping back to the underfoot).

    Assessment/Results Of Tested Specimens

    • Record these observations along with the flat measurements.
    • Subject the socks to the required washing and drying procedure as indicated in the appropriate specification or as per Care Label.
    • Re-measure the flat dimensions and record the results.
    • Calculate the dimensional change in terms of a percentage of the original dimensions
    • Re-fit each sock onto the board, fully stretching, extending and massaging and observe the nature of the fit as before (Para 4).
    • Record the observations with the dimensional change results.

    General Requirement for Sock

    • Washing label: need wash under 40C for Cotton and Wool
    • Test by SGS only because they have full equipment for sock testing
    • Tension of welt elastic can’t too tight, must follow approval sample
    • Elastic are well finished and can’t broken or expose outside

    Reporting Of Results

    • Report:
    • Size of socks tested.
    • Size of sock board used.
    • The average percentage dimensional change of the leg and foot of the two socks.
    • Fit observations.
    • Washing and drying procedure applied.

    Directives

DISPERSE DYES:  Certain Disperse dyes have been shown to cause sensitisation when in prolonged contact with skin. Please see Appendix 1 for a list of those which must not be used.

FORMALDEHYDE: When tested against BS EN 14184 Part 1 Method for Assessment of FREE Formaldehyde, fabrics and components for the following end uses must not exceed the limits indicated:

Underwear & Garments for children under 3 years of age              Not Detected

Garments intended to be worn next to the skin for children

over 3 years of age                                                                    75ppm

Outerwear Garments for children over 3 years of age                    300ppm

Auto does not require the testing of RELEASED Formaldehyde levels.

NONYLPHENOL, OCTYLPHENOL and their ETHOXYLATES (Alkyl Ethoxylates)

Auto Childrenswear does not accept the use of any of the above chemicals in the production or processing of any goods.

PH:  The pH level of all finished fabrics must be in the range of 5.5 – 7.5 when used in Auto clothing.

ACID/ENZYME WASH:  Where garments are to be subjected to an Acid/Enzyme wash, tolerances in wash level must be established prior to production.

PIGMENT DYE:  All garments using Pigment Dyes must be assessed for suitability on an individual basis by the Fabric Technology Department.

The garment supplier must demonstrate that the required shade will meet Auto Childrenswear Colour Fastness requirements and Appearance After Wash PRIOR to accepting any order. See testing requirements.

PRINTS – ALLOVER:  Dark Colours –   Allover prints on cotton or cotton/elastane fabrics, woven or jersey, which contain                           dark colours should be reactive printed.

If Pigment Print is requested specifically for design purposes                                                         then it is the garment supplier’s responsibility to demonstrate                                                      that the level of colour being supplied will meet Auto colour                                                     fastness requirements PRIOR to production of bulk fabric.

Where applicable on outerwear garments, if pigment                                                                    printing has been used, additional swing ticketing may be                                                             requested by the buying department.

Medium/Light Colours –  Prints below 40% coverage may be pigment printed with compaction.

Any medium/light print with above 40% coverage where                                                                pigment printing may be appropriate must be approved by the                                                       Fabric Technology department at Auto prior to costing.

Clarification on shade class may be sought from the Fabric                                                           Technology Department.

N.B. Under no circumstances should buying teams be supplied with costings for allover pigment prints which do not meet the requirements outlined above. In the occurrence of this event the Supplier will be required to replace the order with reactive printing at their own cost.

SULPHUR DYES:  Sulphur dyes can only be used on Auto Childrenswear product after discussing with the Fabric Technology department

The garment supplier must also demonstrate that the fabric which is being Sulphur Dyed will comply with Auto Childrenswear colour fastness requirements PRIOR to accepting any order.

STONEWASHING: Stonewashing must not be used in the processing of any fabrics or garments for children below 3 years of age.

    When stonewashing garments:

Pockets and other orifices must be sewn closed before washing.

Pockets must be turned inside out and cleaned at final inspection.

All garments must be metal detected.

Due to the possibility that residue from the stonewashing process can set off                                  the metal detector at the required setting, it is the suppliers responsibility to                             demonstrate to the relevant technologist that all stonewashed product is                                             being processed in compliance with Auto requirements.

All the above processes must be recorded and the documentation must be                                    available upon request.

    • Scale & corrosion inhibitor
    • Biocide for open evaporative system
    • Biocide for open evaporative system
    • Dosing system for Scale & corrosion inhibitor chemical.
    • This chemical is use daily. For dosing chemical we use a container. In this container we put chemical for a day. The chemical dose to cooling tank by dosing pipe. This chemical is use for controlling scale & corrosion of water.
