Setting-up a competence team equips your company with a contact point capable and responsible for questions about cleaner production, efficiency improvements and environmental upgrades.   The team’s tasks are amongst others to compile the required information for improvements, to set up ideas and implement cleaner production measures, to monitor and benchmark their success and to keep employees informed by internal communication. If there is something to replace, to reorganise or to purchase the team can facilitate the decision-making process.   From the start, you will need someone to take charge of the efficiency improvement process. This person, called the coordinator, will have a project management role. If this is your first experience with cleaner production, the coordinator will have to break new ground. Therefore, be sure to choose someone with a good leadership.   To be effective, the team should have enough collective knowledge to review and analyse current production practices and energy systems. They should also be able to find cost-effective, technically feasible and environmentally friendly opportunities, and to implement and evaluate them. For a better integration and to facilitate change acceptance, involve employees responsible for business functions such as maintenance, production, health and safety, purchasing and transportation if possible. Furthermore it is important to afford the team members the necessary time for this additional work. Motivated staff and the commitment by management are key assets for the team’s success.
The environmental effects depend on the measures taken and implemented by the team.
For a start, no extra costs are associated with this option except for the team’s working time. Follow up pay-back periods and savings depend on the specific measures implemented by the team.   Experience shows, that the vast majority of cost-saving cleaner production measures are implemented as a result of a joint effort by such competence teams and management commitment to the project.
